Direct Visualization and Quantitation of CSF flow in Shunts

چکیده
Introduction Diversion of excessive cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) from hydrocephalic brains by shunting is, in many cases, a life saving procedure. The down side of shunting is high failure rate (40% in the first year, and about 10% annually thereafter). Consequently, about 43% of the estimated 40,000 shunting procedures performed annually in the US alone are for shunt replacement. A study of implanted ventricular shunts in the US found the annual cost of treatment in the year 2000 exceeded one billion dollars [1]. The decision for shunt replacement is often challenging as there is no reliable noninvasive diagnostic test for shunt function. A reliable noninvasive measurement of volumetric flow through shunts may therefore improve the decision for shunt replacement and perhaps reduce unnecessary shunting procedures.

Long-Term Neuropsychological Sequelae in HIV-Seronegative Cryptococcal Meningoencephalitis Patients with and without Ventriculoperitoneal Shunts: A Cine MRI Study
BACKGROUND Hydrocephalus in cryptococcal meningoencephalitis is most commonly managed with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. This study applied cine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to evaluate initial disease severity on long-term cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow dynamics and associated neuropsychological sequelae in cryptococcal meningoencephalitis patients with and without ventriculoperitoneal shu...
متن کاملMeasurement of flow of cerebrospinal fluid in shunts by transcutaneous thermal convection. Technical note.
With the goal of developing a practical method of performing noninvasive measurements of flow in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunts, transcutaneous thermal convection CSF shunt flow measurement was investigated using dimensional analysis, numerical modeling, and bench testing. Using appropriate manufacturing practices and controls, a microcontroller-based device was designed, constructed, and cli...
متن کاملHigh-Resolution CINE MRI for the Visualization of Arachnoid Adhesions
Arachnoid adhesions are a common underlying cause for the development of idiopathic syringomyelia by causing CSF flow blockages. There is no direct geometrical relation between the location of the syringomyelia and the responsible arachnoid adhesion. For minimization of the trauma during the surgical intervention, the precise identification of the location of the culprit adhesion appears mandat...
متن کاملVentricular shunt tap as a predictor of proximal shunt malfunction in children: a prospective study.
OBJECT The clinical diagnosis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt malfunction can be challenging. In this prospective study, the authors evaluated a common method of interrogating shunts: the shunt tap; specifically, its ability to predict proximal malfunction. METHODS The authors performed standardized shunt taps in a consecutive series of cases involving children with suspected or proven shu...
متن کاملFlow Visualization Around a Non - Circular Tube
The flow behavior around a cam shaped tube in cross flow has been investigated experimentally using flow visualization and pressure distribution measurement. The range of attack angle and Reynolds number based on an equivalent circular diameter are within 0 ≤ α ≤ 360˚ and 2 x 104 < Reeq < 3.4 x 104, respectively. The pressure drag features are clarified in relation to the flow behavior around t...
